Base shoe / U-channel

Glass sits in a continuous aluminium channel (base shoe) that runs the length of the run, dry-glazed with gaskets or set with a structural infill. This hides all fixings, gives the cleanest continuous line, and is common on premium commercial and high-traffic projects. It is the most material-heavy option and usually the most expensive.

Post-and-clamp

Glass is held by clamps mounted on posts, often paired with a top rail. This is the most traditional look and a practical choice for stairs, mixed-material designs, and budget-sensitive projects. It uses more visible hardware than the frameless systems.

Commercial guardrails and mezzanines. Base shoe and engineered spigot systems are typical, because commercial occupancy usually carries higher load requirements and tighter inspection.

Glass railing uses safety glass: tempered, or laminated tempered for added redundancy. The thickness scales with the panel size, the guard height, and the system. Frameless spigot and standoff systems generally use thicker glass than framed or post-and-clamp systems because the glass is doing more structural work.

Whether you need laminated glass often comes down to whether the system has a continuous top rail. Guards without a top rail commonly require laminated glass so a panel cannot fail open. This varies by jurisdiction and occupancy, so confirm the requirement for your project rather than assuming.

  • 304 vs 316 stainless steel. 304 is the standard interior and general-purpose grade. 316 adds corrosion resistance and is the right call for coastal, poolside, and exposed exterior projects. Specifying 304 in a marine environment is a common and expensive mistake.
